Medication and allergy lists
Keep your clinic's own lists of medications, allergens and allergy reactions, which the chart suggests as staff type, and merge duplicates.
Your clinic keeps three lists that the patient chart suggests while staff type:
- Medication Library: the medications the Medications page suggests, each with an optional strength, form and default route.
- Allergen Library: the substances the Allergies page suggests, each in a category: Drug, Food, Environmental or Other.
- Allergy Reactions: the reactions the allergy form suggests, such as hives, rash or swelling.
Open them under Setup > Clinical libraries. Anyone with access to Setup can see the lists; only people whose role can manage clinical libraries can change them.
A new clinic starts with a list of medications, allergens and reactions common in pediatric therapy. They are yours to edit, deactivate or delete.
How the lists grow from the chart#
Staff do not need to visit Setup to record something new. On the chart, start typing in Medication, Substance or Reaction:
- Pick a suggestion to use the entry from your list. Picking a medication with a default route fills in Route.
- If nothing matches, choose Add "..." (or press Enter) to keep what you typed. When the chart saves, the name is added to your list, so the next person finds it.
Names are matched without regard to capital letters or extra spaces, so ibuprofen and Ibuprofen never become
two entries. A medication added this way has no strength or form until you edit it here.
The chart always keeps the text it saved. Renaming, merging, deactivating or deleting a list entry never changes what a patient's chart shows.
Add or edit an entry#
- Open the list and click New Medication, New Allergen or New Reaction.
- Enter the name. For a medication, add the Strength, Form and Default route if you want them; for an allergen, choose the Category.
- Click Create Medication, Create Allergen or Create Reaction.
To change an entry, click Edit on its row. A medication name can be listed once for each strength and form, for
example plain Amoxicillin and Amoxicillin at 400 mg/5 mL as a suspension. A name typed on a chart links to the
plain entry.
Deactivate or delete an entry#
Click Deactivate on a row to stop suggesting it. Charts that picked it keep it, and you can click Activate to bring it back. Delete removes the entry from the list; charts keep their text either way.
Merge duplicates#
When the same thing is listed twice, such as a brand name and its generic, merge them:
- Click Merge Into... on the entry you want to remove.
- In Keep this medication (or allergen, or reaction), search for and pick the entry that stays.
- Click Merge.
The Charts column shows how many chart records picked each entry. A merge moves those records to the entry you keep, then removes the duplicate. Each chart still shows the name it saved.
