Custom Fields

Add your own typed fields to patient and staff profiles, such as a school district or a hire date, with groups, required fields and list filters.

When your clinic tracks something NeatPractice has no field for, add a custom field. Open Setup > Custom Fields.

Creating a field#

Click New Field and fill in:

  • Profile: patient or staff. This cannot change later.
  • Type: text, number, date, yes or no, single select or multi select. Once any profile has a value, the type is locked.
  • Label and Group: fields sharing a group show together on the profile.
  • Merge key: a short unique name for the field in lowercase letters, digits and underscores, such as school_district.
  • Options: for a single or multi select, one choice per line. A choice that profiles still hold cannot be removed.
  • Required: a profile cannot be saved without a value.
  • Archived: the field leaves the forms; values already saved stay visible.

Deleting a field nobody filled in removes it. A field that holds values is archived instead, so the values stay on file.

Filling in fields#

  • Patients: the chart's Demographics page shows a Clinic Fields section. Click Edit to change the values. A patient's values are part of their chart.
  • Staff: open a provider and use the Clinic fields tab.

Filled-in patient fields also print in a Clinic fields section on the face sheet.

Filtering the patient list#

On the patient list, click Clinic field, pick a field and a value, and click Apply. Text fields match part of the value; other types match it exactly. You can combine up to five field filters. Values you filter by are never put in the page's address.
