Goal library

Keep your clinic's standard goals by discipline and area, with placeholders, levels, measurements and default targets.

The goal library holds the standard goals your therapists choose from when they write a plan of care. Goals are organized by discipline, such as speech-language pathology (SLP) or occupational therapy (OT), and then by area, such as articulation or fine motor skills.

Open Setup > Clinical libraries > Goal Library. Anyone with access to Setup can see the library; only people whose role can manage clinical libraries can change it.

The starter goals#

A new clinic starts with a set of speech-language pathology and occupational therapy goals written by NeatPractice. They belong to your clinic from the first day: edit, reorder, deactivate or delete them as you like.

Read the library#

Pick a discipline from the tabs at the top. Each area is a card with its goals in order. Every goal shows:

  • Its level: a long-term goal, or a short-term goal that works toward one. A short-term goal sits under the long-term goal it supports and is indented.
  • How it is measured and its default target, such as 80%, 8 trials or minimal cues.
  • Inactive when it is turned off.

Use the search box to find goals by their words or area, and the status filter to show only active or inactive goals. Changing either one clears any goals you checked, so a bulk action only reaches goals you can see. When nothing matches, click Clear filters.

Placeholders#

Goal text can hold blanks in double braces, the same way smart phrases and reminder templates write their merge fields. Click Insert field above the goal text to add one where the cursor is, or type {{ and pick from the list that opens (arrow keys and Enter work too).

PlaceholderFills withFilled
{{patient}}The patient's first nameAutomatically, from the chart
{{n}}The target number, such as a percent or a countOn the plan of care; starts as the default target
{{cueing}}The cueing level, such as minimal cuesOn the plan of care; starts as the default cueing level
{{timeframe}}When the goal should be metOn the plan of care; starts from the plan's length

For example: {{patient}} will produce the target sound in short phrases with {{n}}% accuracy.

In the list, a blank that fills in automatically is highlighted in your accent color; a blank the therapist completes has a dashed amber outline. NeatPractice rejects a name in braces it does not know, so a typo like {{patint}} is caught when you save. Square brackets are plain text, so sound notation such as [s], [sh] or [str] is never treated as a blank. Goals written with the older [patient], [n], [cueing] and [timeframe] blanks were converted for you.

Add a goal#

  1. Click New Goal.
  2. Choose the Discipline and type the Area. A new area appears as its own card; typing an existing area in different capitals joins that area.
  3. Write the Goal. Use Insert field (or type {{) to add a placeholder where the therapist fills in details.
  4. Choose the Level. For a short-term goal, choose the long-term goal it sits Under.
  5. Choose how it is Measured by and enter a Default target:
    • Percent accuracy: a percent above 0 and up to 100.
    • Trials: a whole number of trials.
    • Frequency: a whole number of times per session.
    • Duration: minutes.
    • Cueing level: no number; set the Cueing level instead.
  6. Optionally choose a Cueing level for any goal, such as "with minimal cues".
  7. Click Create Goal. The new goal goes to the end of its area.

Edit a goal#

  • Click the pencil on a goal to edit its text, measurement and target (or cueing level, for a goal measured by cueing) right in the list, then click Save. The goal stays listed while you edit it, and switching discipline asks before unsaved changes are dropped.
  • Open the menu on a goal and choose Edit details to change its discipline, area, level or cueing level too.

A long-term goal keeps its level and discipline while short-term goals sit under it. Move those goals first.

Reorder goals#

Drag a goal by its handle, or use the up and down arrows, to change its place in its area. Reordering is off while a search or status filter is applied, so you always see the whole area you are changing.

Activate, deactivate or delete goals#

Select goals with their checkboxes, then choose Activate, Deactivate or Delete in the bar at the bottom.

  • Inactive goals stay in the library but no longer appear when a therapist picks goals for a plan of care.
  • A goal can be deleted only while nothing uses it. A goal a plan of care started from, or a long-term goal whose short-term goals are not deleted with it, is kept and listed in a message; deactivate it instead.

Your own goal bank#

Besides the clinic library, every user can keep a personal goal bank. Open the My goal bank tab and click New Goal to add one: it takes the same discipline, area, text, level and measurement as a library goal, but it stands alone (no long-term and short-term pairs). Only you can edit or delete your goals.

To share your bank, click Share and pick the colleagues who may use it. They see your active goals on their Shared with me tab, read-only. Clear the list to stop sharing.

When you write a plan of care, Add From Library offers the clinic library first, then your own goals and the goals colleagues share with you, each marked with whose bank it comes from. Exports, imports and the printed list cover the clinic library only.

Import, export and print#

Click Export CSV to download the library with each goal's discipline, area, level and measurement, and Print for a PDF of the list. Click Import CSV to add goals from a file in the same format; a goal whose discipline, area and text are already in the library is skipped. Imported short-term goals are not linked to a long-term goal until you place them. See Import, export and print.
